3 Day Trek via Mahoma Nature Trail

The 3 Days Mahoma Loop Rwenzori Nature walk camping trail takes the most popular camping trail in the Rwenzori Mountains. The Mahoma Nature trail is a typical wild camping trail in the Rwenzori mountains national park. Rwenzori Mountains is wonder of high glaciers and beautiful valley lakes. Beared lichen hanging from giant heathers with a backdrop of rocky cliffs, crags and snowcapped peaks. There is a wide variety of flora and fauna with several biospheres as you ascend through different vegetation zones. This creates the ultimate nature trekking experience. This unique and beautiful trek; totally untouched is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful treks in the world.

Day 1: From Fort portal town or Kasese the park gate – Mihuna Park gate 1615m asl  – Omukakiiza 2977M

Your 3 Days mahoma Nature walk/ camping trail trek starts in the morning after breakfast. Our driver guide will pick you from either Fort portal town or kasese at 8:00am after your breakfast to the Rwenzori where you will meet the guides, porters and chefs then the guide will lead you to the park gate where you will do registration with Uganda wild life authority and attend a briefing with our professional and expert guide and after the briefing you will start the hike.

This hike starts at the park gate, taking the trail to the left. Gradually reaching garden plots and elephants grass and then join the forest zone. This takes you through the pristine rainforest of kyambogho ridge with a view of the Mubuku Valley. Thereafter climb the heavily forested ridge which is home to many primates. Spot several primates like the black and white colobus monkey, blue monkey and occasionally the L’hoest monkey, you will be following the first peaks in the mountain called portal peaks. Reach Omu’kaKizza Rest Camp at 2,977metres for an overnight. Enjoy the magnificent views over the Rwenzori foothills and Kasese town from 2,977 metres above.

Day 2: Omukakiiza  2977M – Lake Mahoma 3515M

The second day you hike to Lake Mahoma. The forest gives way to a long narrow moss covered ridge up to 3,515 meters.

Trek through an incredibly beautiful forest of giant heather covered in layers of bright green moss.

You will follow the footprints of mountain Elephants through the bamboo and heather forest. You may spot and watch them having a drink at the hot spring. The ridge will lead you to the Rukenga valley where you will see the everlasting flowers (mimulopsiseliotti) and the giant lobelia. You then cross to Lake Mahoma Camp for the night.

From Lake Mahoma with a  clear sky you can see Mount Baker, Mount Stanley.

Day 3: Lake Mahoma 3515M to Nyabitaba to Mihunga gate 1615M.

After breakfast go for a walk around Lake Mahoma. Thereafter descend back through the bamboo zone to the junction of the Central circuit trail. Descend pass Nyabitaba to the Mpanga ridge to adjoin the Mubuku valley. This is a home of three horned chameleon.

After a rest at the resting point, descend back to Mihunga park gate to end your beautiful 3 day Trek in Rwenzori.
